Herman Merivale

Herman Merivale ( born November 8, 1806 Dawlish, Devon, † February 8, 1874 ) was an English civil servant and also worked as an author. He was the older brother of Charles Merivale, and father of the poet Herman Charles Merivale.

He was born in Dawlish, Devonshire, he attended Harrow School. From 1823 he attended Oriel College, Oxford. In 1825 he became a student at Trinity College. In the year he also won the Irish "scholarship ". Three years later he was chosen by Balliol College. He was a member of the Inner Temple and practiced in the western district.

From 1837 to 1842 he was professor of economics at Oxford. In 1859 he was appointed "permanent under- secretaryship " from India. 1870 Merivale D.C.L of Oxford.
