Hermann Knoblauch

Karl Hermann Knoblauch (* April 11, 1820 in Berlin, † 30 June 1895 in Baden -Baden ) was a German physicist.

Life

Garlic was the son of the Berlin silk ribbon - manufacturer Carl Friedrich Wilhelm garlic ( 1793-1859 ). After visiting the Cöllnischen Real Gymnasium in Berlin garlic graduated Pädagogium in Züllichau. Then he should take over the family business at the request of parents, garlic graduated in Frankfurt an apprenticeship and got besides private lessons. So that he could successfully exist as the External High School.

After several confrontations with his family garlic was allowed to study at the University of Berlin mathematics, science, and philosophy. His teacher Gustav Magnus allowed his best students soon idea to use his private laboratory. 1847 ended garlic successfully his studies with a dissertation on " the heat ".

In addition to his research, he qualified and put in the same year the head teacher exam from. In 1848 he was able to habilitation for the physics and a year later got a job at the University of Bonn as Privatdozent. But by the end of that year he accepted an appointment as aoProf. at the University of Marburg.

There was garlic 1852 o.Prof. appointed. In 1853 he accepted a professorship at the University of Halle, and taught there until the winter semester 1894/95. In addition to his purely scientific work, he was also active as an organizer. 1845 garlic was instrumental in the founding of the " Physical Society ." Between 1868 and 1871 he was entrusted three times with the Office of the Rector of the University.

As such, he established several foundations and grants. Together with the widow of Peter Krukenberg he donated the renovation of the university auditorium. From 1873 garlic was a member of the Prussian House of Lords. He represented there quite liberal views, but otherwise was not politically active. After many years as a member of the Leopoldina ( German Academy of Natural Scientists ) these elected him as its president in 1878. During his presidency, the course was set to a constant settlement of the Leopoldina in Halle. The now grown immensely library required a separate library building.

It dealt mainly with the heat radiation (infrared radiation) and pointed in numerous experiments their nature as electromagnetic radiation according to ( diffraction, interference, double refraction in crystals, etc.).

Garlic died in Baden -Baden, where he promised at a spa cure of pleurisy. His grave is located on the Halle Stadtgottesacker. On the Weinberg Campus of the Martin -Luther- University Halle- Wittenberg today a street is named after him.
