Hermann-Oberth-Gesellschaft

The Hermann Oberth Society is an association that works for the promotion of spaceflight technology researchers and has developed and built their own rockets in the past.

It was founded in 1952 by Karl Poggensee in Bremen German Agency for Space Affairs ( DAFRA ) to develop civilian rockets. In the beginning, various experimental rockets were developed in Hespenbusch in Großenkneten that soon reached heights of a few kilometers, so that the available in Hespenbusch area was too small.

In 1957, the missile launching the DAFRA, which was renamed in German Rocket Society ( DRG), moved to the Watts area of Cuxhaven. There, in 1959 some postal rockets were launched from the German rocket society. On December 15, 1960, the first start of the cumulus was performed with a peak altitude of 20 kilometers, and on 16 September 1961, the first start of the Cirrus with a peak altitude of 50 kilometers.

At this time also began Berthold Seliger, in the context of this company, which was renamed Hermann Oberth society to build rockets. In 1961, Berthold Seliger own company, the Berthold Seliger Research and Development Company, which cooperated with the Hermann- Oberth -Gesellschaft. The Seliger Research and Development Company developed 1962-1963 several missiles with one, two and three stages, could reach the summit heights of up to 150 kilometers altitude. After the controversial flight demonstration of the Seliger Research and Development Company of militarily usable rockets before military representatives from non-NATO countries in the Watts area of Cuxhaven on December 5, 1963, came to the break between the Seliger Research and Development Company and the Hermann Oberth Society. The latter led to June in 1964 by a few rocket launches.

After setting the missile tests in Cuxhaven Wadden area you sat at the Hermann- Oberth -Gesellschaft focus in promoting aerospace technical talent.

In 1993, the Hermann- Oberth -Gesellschaft eV was with the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics, Otto Lilienthal Society, the Society of rocketry and space travel and the trade association for Luftfahrt eV for the German Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics - Lilienthal - Oberth eV ( DGLR ) united.
