Hermann von Gottschall

Hermann von Gottschall ( born October 16, 1862 in Poznan, † March 7 or March 8, 1933 in Görlitz ) was a German chess master and chess composer.

Life

Hermann von Gottschall, son of writer Rudolf von Gottschall (1823-1909), was a lawyer by profession. However, Gottschall operated also as a literary critic. He played from the 1880s at numerous international tournaments. In Nuremberg 1888 he was shared second with Jacques Lousy behind Siegbert Tarrasch. At the end of his career he scored at the tournament in Wroclaw 1925 victories against Akiba Rubinstein, Friedrich Sämisch and Siegbert Tarrasch. 1890 and 1895 he lost two competitions in Berlin and Leipzig against Curt von Bardeleben with 1-5 and 1-4.

Gottschall initiated several years the German chess magazine and was a significant Anderssen biography out: Adolf Anderssen, German veteran chess art, Leipzig 1912.

As a composer, he published the volumes 4 and 5 of the collection of chess problems ( founded by Jean Dufresne ), Leipzig 1898-1908. He also created the Small problem - School, Leipzig in 1885 and the forays into the territory of the chess problem, Berlin / Leipzig 1926 appeared.

Gottschall did not join the new German school, but stayed with his own style, but also often built Bohemian Matt tasks.
