The arc lines span Owl ( Herminia grisealis ), formerly also known as a Zanclognatha nemoralis and sometimes referred to as sloe Zünslereule, is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of cutworms ( Noctuidae ).

Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 24 to 28 millimeters. The forewing ground color varies from gray, which is also the scientific name of the species derives from the Latin language ( griseus = " gray " ), to brown yellow. The dark gray or dark brown inner transverse line leads straight to the front edge, the exterior shows a strong saumwärts looking bulge. The dark, elongated shaft line runs in an arc into the apex. The kidneys blemish can be seen as a dark, thin, long, crescent-shaped bar. On the white- gray hind wings there are two weak dark transverse lines. The proboscis is well developed. The palps are very curved, crescent-shaped top.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

Adults caterpillars are black colored gray to yellow-brown. They show a dark brown dorsal line reddish segment cuts and black dot warts.

The pupa is reddish brown and fitted with six hooks on the cremaster bristles.

Similar Species

The Southern arc lines span Owl ( Herminia tenuialis ) differs by sharply at the leading edge root downward bent inner transverse line and only weakly curved wavy line on the fore wings.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is widespread in Europe. The eastern extension extends to the Ussuri and Japan. It comes in the Alps before up to a height of 1300 meters and settled preferably deciduous and mixed forests, hedges and shrubbery areas and parks.

Way of life

The moths of the arc lines span Owl are crepuscular and nocturnal and fly in a first generation of April to June. In climatically favored areas, a second generation occurs, which is to be found in August and September. Visit artificial light sources and occasionally bait. Live Caterpillars polyphagous on a wide variety of plants, for example to Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa ) and hawthorn ( Crataegus ), oak (Quercus ), elderberry (Sambucus ), dogwood (Cornus ), Nettle ( Urticaceae ) or Rubusarten. The pupae overwinter.

The species occurs in Germany in all provinces and according to the Red List of endangered species are not endangered.
