Heroes of the Valley

Valley - Valley of the Guardians is a fantasy novel by British writer Jonathan Stroud. The work is published under the English original title Heroes of the Valley, 2009. The German, 493 -page translation went on sale in January 2009. The fictional main characters are the young Hal Svensson and his girlfriend Aud Ulfarstochter.

Main characters

The main characters of the novel comes from three different houses:

Sven's house:

  • Arnkel, head of the family
  • Astrid, arbitration mistress of the family

  • Katla, neck nurse

Hakons House:

Action

The story is set in a valley, its borders are guarded by the mountain ranges for a long time from the grave monuments of the ancestors before Trolden, heavily armed, mythical creatures, but never got the generation in which the main characters live to face. The settlers in the valley include twelve different " houses" to each according to one of the twelve heroes - are named, the valley abtrotzten the Trolden at the time of the ancestors and the " Battle of the Troldfelsen " shared their lives for the rescue - including Sven the valley sacrificed. Driven by curiosity and adventure begin Hal and Aud despite strict prohibitions and warnings to explore the limits of the valley.

The book is divided into 29 chapters without a title. Each chapter is preceded by a short prologue in which someone tells the old legends about the hero Sven.

Handlungsort

The valley in which the action takes place, runs elongated from " Steilgebirg " in the west to the east coast. The western part, the upper valley is divided by a narrow, difficult passable gorge with waterfalls from the larger Untertal in the east. In the upper valley there are houses Gisli, Gest, Rurik and Sven, in Untertal the houses Eirik, Thord, Egil, Ketil, Arne, Erlend, Hakon and Orm. Hal comes out of the house Sven Arne Aud out of the house. In the north as in the south, the valley is bounded by mountain ranges. The settlers of the valley are mainly involved in agriculture and animal husbandry.
