Herrenknecht AG is the leading manufacturer of tunnel boring machines. Headquartered in Schwanau - Allmannsweier near Lahr in Baden- Württemberg. Over two-thirds of the 3,165 employees (2009) work at the headquarters in Allmannsweier where the assembly of hydraulic and electronic components, and the final inspection of the tunnel boring machines will be carried out. About 300 employees at three locations in the People's Republic of China. In addition to the assembly of the machines for the Asian market their steel buildings are manufactured there.

History

The company was founded in 1977 by Martin Herrenknecht as Herrenknecht GmbH. In 1992, the first subsidiary was established in the United States. In 1998 the company was transformed into a corporation. On the planned IPO, the owners family renounced because of the bear market in 2000. As a new business field shallow geothermal energy has been developed.

Products

The company manufactures tunnel boring machines. For example, produces Herrenknecht for major projects such as the Gotthard base tunnel or tunneling machine TRUDE who has drilled the extension of the Elbe tunnel. Other products are micro-machines for the expansion of the sewage. The production program covers cross-sections from 10 cm to 19 meters.

Additionally, Herrenknecht service to the Project Management of Tunnel Works and a rental fleet for tunnel boring machines and used machines.

On 26 March 2008, the contract for the construction of a tunnel boring machine of about 20 meters in diameter, was signed in Moscow between Herrenknecht and the company Infrastruktura of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich Arkadyevitch. The machine will cost around 100 million euros and will be delivered in 2 years; they would currently be the largest of its kind

Product portfolio Herrenknecht is rounded off by the production of drilling rigs ( close to the earth and geothermal energy).

Indicators

The company has in terms of sales an export share of 90% ( 2006). Herrenknecht exports its products all over the world.

The world market for devices of the machine tunnel is estimated by Herrenknecht to about 1.5 billion euros, of which the company claims to be about 1.1 billion euros covers (January 2014). The company meets the necessary criteria to be called a Hidden Champion.

Awards

In a study in 2013 of BIESALSKI & COMPANY and the Journal, Business Week ' Herrenknecht AG was voted No. 1 of German hidden champions and thus defended its top position from the year 2011.
