Hestur

Hestur [ hɛstʊɹ ], also Hestoy [ hɛstɔi ] (literally: horse [e- island ], Czech, Danish name: HESTO ) is one of 18 islands in the Faroe Islands and belongs to the region of the main island Streymoy and the municipality Tórshavn. At the same time it has the status of an " outer island " (see Útoyggjar ).

History and Geography

Climatically Hælur located by the south-facing slope may be convenient for cultivation but bad for the fishery, so that the islanders have moved to the East Coast to the present site Hestur.

Infrastructure

In clear highlands of Hestur are located in the area called Fagradalsvatn several small mountain lakes. Here, camping is allowed. For swimming it is there for many people perhaps too cold, and in spite of the few residents Hestur has a private swimming pool. It was completed in 1974. Shopping facilities are no longer on Hestur. However, the island has its own school. The village church dates from 1910 and was renovated in 2006 /2007. Instead of a church tower has an unusual hexagonal roof skylights.

Transport and the economy

Previously Hestur was served by a line ferry from Tórshavn. Meanwhile, there are the new harbor at the southern tip Gamlarætt Streymoys which significantly shortens the already short passage. The rocks were blasted out of there - after thirteen years of planning and preparation - used to build a new quay of the little fishing port of Hestur, from which the island lives ( along with agriculture ).

Currently, an underwater tunnel from the main island of the Faroe Islands, Streymoy, to the island of Sandur in conversation, the Sandoytunnel. He should run in parts under Hestur. Residents Hesturs called multiple times in this context, the tunnel must be built according to a exit Hestur, so that through him the connection of Streymoy after Hestur can be improved.

From the village a paved trail on the east coast of the island along leads south. About him you can reach easily on foot the southern tip Hesturs and the area Hælur, from where you can enjoy a nice view of the neighboring island of Sandur with the harbor Skopun.
