Hexamethyldisilane is a chemical compound from the group of silanes.
Production and representation
Hexamethyldisilane can be obtained by the reaction of chlorotrimethylsilane with sodium in ethyl acetate at 200-230 ° C.
Properties
Hexamethyldisilane is a colorless liquid.
Use
Hexamethyldisilane is used as the silylating reagent for allylic acetates, aryl halides and diketones. It serves as the starting material for vapor deposition of silicon carbide during growth. It is also a precursor of Trimethylsilyllithium, Trimethylsilylnatrium and Trimethylsilylkalium by cleavage with lithium alkyls or alkoxides.
