Hickory ( Carya sp)

Hickory ( Carya ) is a genus of trees of the family of the walnut family ( Juglandaceae ). The genus has today only in North America and East Asia natural occurrence, but is detected in fossil floras of the Tertiary Era in Europe.

The hickory species have a very tough, resilient and durable wood. The wood is popular for the production of tool handles (eg, hammers, axes ), bows, sticks, Lacrossesticks and the like, a long time also for ramrods of muzzle. Even for traditional barbecue Hickory is often used in North America. Until about the mid-20th century, Ski and the shafts of baseball and golf clubs from Hickory were manufactured. The vintage version of golf is therefore called Hickory Golf.

The term comes from the language of Hickory Algonquian Indians, " pocohiquara " and was the name for a drink made from pressed hickory. The distribution of North American hickory trees includes the east coast as well as the space of the Midwest. Even from the Indians of the eastern woodlands Hickory was estimated as bow wood. It is even today used as a bow wood and is one of the best woods for this purpose.

In the adventures of Huckleberry Finn Huck gets his regular beatings his father with a hickory stick.
