Hico is a city in Hamilton County in the U.S. state of Texas.

Geography

The city is located just northeast of the geographical center of Texas, in the northeast of the county on U.S. Highway 281 and has a total area of 3.8 km ² without significant water surface.

History

Named the place was named after the hometown of its founder, Dr. John R. Alford from Hico, Kentucky.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,341 people in 556 households and 363 families. The population density was 352.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 90.23 % White, 0.00 % African American, 0.82 % Native American, 0.00 % Asian, 0.15 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 7.53 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.27% were of mixed descent, and 11.26% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 556 households 30.8 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.4 % were married couples living together. 10.6% were single mothers and 34.7 % were non-families. 31.5 % of all households were single-person households, and 22.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size amounted to 2.99.

26.2% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.9 % from 18 to 24, 23.8 % 25-44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.6 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 82.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 77.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,919, and the median income for a family $ 34,688. Males had a median income of $ 27,404 versus $ 17,708 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,122. 19.5 % of the population and 13.6 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 27.2 % have children under the age of 18 and 22.4 % of those 65 or older.
