Hideo Hagiwara

Hideo Hagiwara (Japanese萩 原 英雄, Hideo Hagiwara; * 1913 in Yamanashi Prefecture; † 4 November 2007) was a Japanese painter. He was one of the best known contemporary Japanese artists.

Hideo Hagiwara began his artistic career after the end of World War II with the first graphic works of representational depictions. In 1958 he graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in Tokyo.

In the late 1950s he had worldwide success with his abstract works. He had exhibitions of his works from woodcut, lithography, etching and screen printing in all renowned museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

1967 Hideo Hagiwara taught at the University of Oregon. In 1983 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Japanese purple ribbon by the Japanese emperor.
