Hierocles (charioteer)

Hierocles († 222 in Rome) was a slave and lover of the Roman Emperor Elagabalus.

He was born in Caria, and excited as charioteers in the Circus Maximus, the attention of the emperor. According to Cassius Dio Elagabalus wanted to raise the Hierocles to Caesar and heir to the throne, but failed so that the resistance of his grandmother Julia Maesa, who had her candidate Severus Alexander. Hierocles was 222 murdered in the overthrow of the Emperor along with other courtiers.
