Hifikepunye Pohamba

Hifikepunye Lucas Pohamba ( born August 18, 1935 in Okanghudi, Ohangwena, South West Africa, now Namibia ) is a Namibian SWAPO politicians. Pohamba since March 21, 2005 President of the Republic of Namibia and was re-elected in the presidential elections in late November 2009 for a second term.

Life

Pohamba, who actually wanted to retire from politics and culture on his farm cattle is allowed to set up at the request of the incumbent president Nujoma as a presidential candidate. He won the presidential elections in Namibia in 2004 with 76.4 % of votes.

From 1947 to 1954 he attended the mission school " Anglican Holy Cross " in Onamunama, Ovamboland. In 1959 he was one of the founding members of the directed against the South African occupation force liberation movement SWAPO (South - West Africa People's Organization - South West African Liberation Movement ). Pohamba in 1961 went into exile. He spent the following years in Tanzania and Angola. From 1964 to 1978 he was SWAPO 's representative in various African countries. He studied political science, he spent 1981-1982 at the Russian Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow, USSR. In the period from 1975 to 1989 he was SWAPO's Secretary of Finance. As election commissioner of SWAPO, he worked from 1989 to 1990 and served President Nujoma from 1990 to 1995 as Minister of Internal Affairs, from 1995 to 1998 as minister of fisheries, from 1998 to 2000 as minister without portfolio, and from 2001 to 2005 as Minister of Land Affairs. He was also in the period from 1997 to 2002 SWAPO Secretary-General and from 2002 to 2007 SWAPO Vice President, then he broke Nujoma from the office of party president. In order to refute speculation about a bid again Nujoma for the office of President, as this is standard practice following previously would have to be elected as party president again.

Pohamba is married and the father of six children since 1983 with Penehupifo Pohamba ( born Hasho ).
