Higbald of Lindisfarne

Higbald of Lindisfarne (also Hibald, Higbaldus, Hygbaldus, Sigebald, Speratus, † May 25 803) was 780-803 an Anglo-Saxon Bishop of Lindisfarne.

Life

As Bishop Cynewulf in 780 resigned his episcopal office, he appointed the Higbald described as active, with the consent of all monks in Sockbury as his successor, and retired to the hermitage on the Farne Islands. Higbald was likely dedicated 781 or only after Cynewulfs death in 783 a bishop.

At the coronation ceremony of King Eardwulf of Northumbria in 796 in York Higbald and the bishops of Hexham and Aethelberht Beadwulf ( Baldulf ) were involved from Whithorn next Archbishop Eanbald I..
