Highland is a city in Madison County in the western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000, Highland had 8,438 inhabitants.

The city is part of the Metro - East region called that includes the eastern part of Illinois lying in the metropolitan area of St. Louis in Missouri.

Geography

History

The area around the present town of Highland was settled in the early 19th century by German Swiss immigrants. The former name of Helvetia goes back to it. However, since there was a city of the same name in the northeast of Illinois, it was renamed in Highland Park.
