Higinio Moríñigo

Higinio Morínigo ( born January 11, 1897 in Paraguarí, † 1985 in Buenos Aires ) was a Paraguayan general and politician. He was President of Paraguay from December 7, 1940 to June 3, 1948.

After taking office in December 1940 continued Morínigo the constitution and banned political parties. In 1946, he permitted political activities again and formed a cabinet with the Febreristas and Colorado. His tenure was marked by massive resistance in the population as well as several general strikes. Through the support of the armed forces of Paraguay, however, he was able to hold fully in place until 1946.

In 1946, broke the government coalition of right-wing Colorado and the revolutionary oriented Febreristas, which fought on the side of the Liberals and the Communist Party. In 1947 following civil war succeeded Morínigo with the help of loyal military and paramilitary organizations regain control over the state. In 1948, he was, however, overthrown in a coup from the Colorado Party 's own ranks and went into political asylum in Argentina. Successor was Juan Manuel Frutos.

Without ever having played a role again in the Paraguayan politics, died Morínigo 1985 in Buenos Aires.
