The railway line Hildesheim - Braunschweig is a 43 km long main line in Lower Saxony. The until December 2012 and single-track electrified line runs right through the Hildesheimer Borde. It was two-pronged expanded to improve the compatibility between long-distance and local transport.

History

Hildesheim and Braunschweig had received their railway connections already in the 1840s. A direct connection of the former border between the Kingdom of Hanover and the Duchy of Brunswick was, however, at least not desirable in Hanover. The east -west traffic ran over and Taught Kreiensen, Hildesheim was connected only after Taught in the north and with a branch line to Nordstemmen station on the southern railway Hannöversche.

After the annexation of Hanover by Prussia, things changed slowly. The Hannover- Altenbekener Railway built the Weser Railway and extended this in 1875 with the railway line Hildesheim - Goslar to the southeast. This Hildesheim was connected to the east-west traffic. Only had to put in the northern Harz area of iron ore mining for direct connection to Braunschweig; 1888, about 35 km connection of Hildesheim was taken to the railway line between Hanover and Braunschweig in large sliding things into operation. Four years later reversed the first German D- train, the D 31/32 between Cologne and Berlin, across the track, as they represented the shortest distance in kilometers.

The track was still secondary. It is tangent to Hannover it came up to 1960 the old Brunswick train station, which inhibited as the head station to through traffic. As of 1945, the inner German border blocked the majority of the traffic from Braunschweig to the east.

In the construction of the high-speed line Hannover -Würzburg and the Hildesheimer loop was built to connect to Hildesheim and Braunschweig towards the south. Since 1991, traveled IC trains from Frankfurt and Gottingen, Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Magdeburg to Berlin. These were replaced by ICE in 1993; since 1998, they take the route via the east Brunswick Weddeler loop and the high speed line Hannover- Berlin. The single-track operation proves to be susceptible lateness. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 1992 and his successor in 2003, a rail line wages -Hameln -Hildesheim - Braunschweig is included, inter alia, the continuous two-pronged expansion is planned.

The section between Hildesheim and Great Gleidingen was 20 June to 12 September 2002 completely blocked for a renovation.
