Hildisvíni

Hildisvini, also Hildiswini ( Old Norse Hildisvini "Battle Pig" ) is a boar in Norse mythology, the goddess Freya uses as a mount. He has golden bristles, and was created by the dwarves Dain and Nabbi. From it reported only the Hyndlalied, the Hyndlulióð. There is also hinted that Hildisvini could be the Ebergestalt the hero Ottar only, with a ratio Freya is received.

The boar Freya's very reminiscent of the boar of her brother Freyr called Gullinborsti. Both is a boar as a means of disposal, both animals have golden bristles and were created by dwarfs. It seems as if the poet of the song Hyndlulióð Gullinborsti had in mind when he wrote the verses about Hildisvini.

It is likely that Hildisvini was not a form of Nordic folk mythology, but comes from a scholarly speculation. In Norse heroic saga there was namely an almost identical helmet called Hildisvin who might have been familiar to the poets of the Hyndlulióð well, perhaps even by the Prose Edda, which originated before his song. The name of the helmet suggests that the crest represented a boar. The helmet was, according to the Prose Edda, the Norwegian king Áli fighting with the Swedish king Adils. According to another, and more probable tradition of the English epic Beowulf was Áli ( there Onela ) uncle ( mother's brother ) of Adils ( Endgils ) and not Norwegian but Swedish king before Adils took over the throne. The Eberhelm thus embodies apparently a sacred symbol of the Swedish royal family, who saw themselves as descendants of Freyr, resulting in a close relationship to the goddess Freya.

Nevertheless, it is possible that a boar was considered the animal Freya because they " sow " was also the nickname of Syr.

The hero Ottar could go back to a historical person who lived in medieval Norway at the royal court.
