Hillbrow Tower

The Telkom Joburg Tower, Johannesburg is situated in the district of Hillbrow TV tower. He is with 270 meters height, the tallest structure on the African continent. The tower, which originally JG Strijdom Tower - named after the former South African Prime Minister John Gerhardus Strijdom - and was called until 2005 was known as the Hillbrow Tower, was built between June 1968 and April 1971.

The tower is used for transmission of radio and television programs as well as the South African telecommunications company Telkom. In January 1981, the tower was closed for safety to the public. The tower basket consists of six floors, of which 197 m was a revolving restaurant until closing on the top.

The final name change took place in a ceremony held on 31 May 2005. Since then, the tower is illuminated at night in blue. The city of Johannesburg tries carefully to upgrade again to the city center and the adjoining districts.

In Johannesburg, there is a second TV tower, the Sentech Tower.
