Description

The Riementang is anchored to the substrate by an adhesive disc. The olive-brown thallus is divided into two parts: the base is a pedunculated, button - up cup-shaped vegetative structure of about 2 to 5 cm in height and diameter. From the middle of spring up to four very long, narrow, strap- shaped bands that on several occasions forked branch. They reach a length of 1 to 2 ( rare to 3 ) m and a width of 5 to 10 mm.

Frequently you will find only the torn ligaments entangled washed up on the beach, which is probably to the English name Sea Spaghetti ( = Sea Spaghetti ) has led.

Development

The Riementang is a diploid generation without change. On the surface of Thallusbänder the reproductive organs, punctate Konzeptakeln, irregularly distributed. Antheridia and oogonia arise on separate copies. The antheridia set motile sperm. Each oogonium is only one egg.

After fertilization, the zygote grows in late summer to the " bowl " approach. In the winter, usually in January and February, from the fertile Thallusbänder start ( seminal receptacles ) out grow and bifurcate four to six times. Later lengthen and thicken it merely without bifurcate again. In July-September they reach reproductive maturity.

Occurrence

The Riementang is common in the North-East Atlantic from Scandinavia ( Faroe Islands ) to Portugal and Spain. It is also found in the North Sea and Baltic Sea. In Helgoland he is only temporarily at home, he is there but found regularly washed up on the beach after storms in late summer.

The Riementang settled gently sloping rocks in the lower intertidal zone. Especially on protected from surf spots can occur in distinct belts at the low water line.

System

The first description of Riementangs was made in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus, under the name Fucus elongatus (In: Species Plantarum, Volume 2, page 1159 ). Samuel Frederick Gray placed the type 1821 in the genus Himanthalia Lyngbye (In: A natural arrangement of British plants, Volume 1, p 389 ). The Riementang is the only species of this genus, which had been erected by Hans Christian Lyngbye 1819 ..

Synonyms for Himanthalia elongata (L.) L. elongatus SFGray are Fucus, Fucus loreus L., Fucus pruniformis Gunnerus, Fucus tomentosus Hudson, Funicularius tuberculatus Roussel, Himanthalia lorea ( Linnaeus) Lyngbye, Spongia dichotoma Hudson and Ulva tomentosa (Hudson ) De Candolle.

Himanthalia elongata belongs as the sole representative of the family Himanthaliaceae ( Kjellman ) De Toni in the order of the Fucales.

Use

In France and Ireland, the Riementang is traded under the name " Sea Spaghetti " or " sea beans " as food. For this, the Thallusbänder are dried, cut into finger size and packed. After soaking in water they are used in salads. The taste is described as mild.
