Hiorthhamn

Hiorthhamn (1925 first Hiorth ( h) avn, 1927 Hiorth ( h) amn, from 1935 also Moskushamn ) is a former mining village in the Advent fjord on the island of Spitsbergen. The settlement is Longyearbyen on the opposite side of the fjord.

The settlement was built in the years 1916 to 1921 on behalf of the coal mining company A / S De Norske Spitsbergen Kulfelter. The name Hiorthavn she got in honor of the former director Fredrik Wilhelm Louis Hiorth ( 1851-1923 ). The Hiorthfjellet, a 924 m high hill south of the village, at the edge, there was the mine, still bears his name today. Due to the naming compilation " Hiorth - hamn " ( hamn a Norwegian word for harbor ) one finds spellings with one or two "h". In 1925, the settlement with the houses from the discontinued mining village Advent City, which was a few miles north, extended. Since 1927, the name Hiorthamn is occupied. Today, the town and the mine of Norske Kulfelter A / S from Fana near Bergen, which was founded in 1938 belong. This gave the place a new name Moskushamn, according to the 1929 exposed in the region musk ox. The musk oxen increased initially and reached approximately 50-100 individuals in the 1960s. After the stock fell significantly. The last sighting dates back to 1985, so they are now on Spitsbergen to be extinct. Mining took place in the 582 m above sea level. M. lying mine instead of sporadically until the operation was finally closed in 1940. In 2002, the name was changed back to Hiorthhamn.

Today you can find in a number Hiorthhamn houses plus technical facilities from mining, particularly cable cars and other material remains. The facilities are in relatively good condition and serviced. In Hiorthhamn can be found, in addition to Ny -Ålesund, the best preserved historic mining equipment Spitsbergen. Some residents of Longyearbyen entertain Cottages in Hiorthhamn.
