Hiram Y. Smith

Ypsilanti Hiram Smith ( born March 22, 1843 in Piqua, Ohio; † November 4, 1894 in Des Moines, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1884 and 1885 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1850, Hiram Smith came with his parents to Rock Iceland in Illinois and 1854 to Des Moines, Iowa. There he attended the public schools. In 1861 he became a member of the militia, to take part in some battles against the Indians. From January 1862 to February 1864, Smith was employed by the Ministry of Postal Services in the Federal Capital Washington. He then worked until 1865 for the Ministry of Finance. After a subsequent law degree from Albany Law School in Albany (New York) and in 1866 made ​​his admission to the bar he began in Des Moines to work in his new profession. Between 1875 and 1879 he was a prosecutor in the fifth judicial district of Iowa.

Smith was a member of the Republican Party. From 1882 to 1884 he was a member of the Senate of Iowa. Following the resignation of Congressman John A. Kasson Smith was chosen in the seventh constituency of Iowa as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he finished between 2 December 1884, 3 March 1885, the legislature Unopened his predecessor. In the regular congressional elections of 1884 Smith did not run.

After the end of his short time in Congress Hiram Smith moved back out of politics. In the following years until his death in November 1894, he again worked as a lawyer.
