Hirvensalo

Hirvensalo [ hirvɛnsɑlɔ ] is a 12.8 km ² island in the Archipelago Sea off the southwest coast of Finland. It belongs to the city of Turku and is immediately upstream of the city center. From the islands to the north and Ruissalo Satava and Kakskerta in the south Hirvensalo is also only separated by narrow sounds. To the west lies the open sea area Airisto.

Hirvensalo has long been sparsely populated and covered with deciduous forests. Especially since the 1980s, new residential areas on the island are incurred, that Hirvensalo has developed a suburban character and today has around 7000 inhabitants. Hirvensalo belongs to the municipality Hirvensalo - Kakskerta and is divided into the districts of Friskala, Haarla, Illoinen, Jänessaari, Kaistarniemi, Kukola, Lauttaranta, Maanpää, Moikoinen, Oriniemi, Papinsaari, Pikisaari, Särkilahti and Toijainen.

The first mention of Hirvensalo dates back to 1336th Originally the island was an exclave on the north of Turku commune in Maaria. 1944 Hirvensalo was incorporated in Turku.
