Historical atlas

A historical atlas is a systematic work of cartography, which, for example, summarizing a situation of the past one event in world history, through a series of thematic maps as atlas.

Term

The term Historical Atlas is clearly used in the kartografiehistorischen literature. A single card is called the history card.

Historical atlases are often dubbed by card publishers but as Historical Atlas. This term is somewhat ambiguous, since it can also be understood as an old atlas. The situation is different in English, where historical atlas always means a Historical Atlas. Of course, a Historical Atlas, published about before 1850 or 1800, be the same "old".

History of historical atlases

An early example is the 1721 by Herman Moll ( 1654-1732 ) printed in London Atlas Thirty two new and accurate maps of the Geography of the Ancients.

Purpose

Historical atlases are used for visualization of historical events, situations and developments. In addition to the basic card to historical borders is the thematic map of importance, for example, with the representation of natural resources and farms.

Typical topics of the cards of a Historical Atlas include:

  • Military battles and general course of war;
  • The routes of expeditions;
  • The spread of culture, such as the Gothic cathedrals;
  • Representation of population trends;
  • Territorial changes, for example after a peace treaty;
  • Legal conditions after areas, such as the city of the eastern settlement rights or civil law in Germany before the introduction of the Civil Code;
  • Old post way with the corresponding distances in days or weeks expected.

Bible Atlas

A Bible Atlas contains maps of the geographical and temporal space of the biblical narratives, ie, mainly the ancient Near East. In addition to geographical and political maps include other thematic maps, such as the vegetation, the spread of particular religions or the journeys of the Apostle Paul. In addition, explanatory texts, images and other graphics are often inserted.
