Hizan

Hizan (formerly Erzent; (Armenian Խիզան ) ) is the name of a district town and a district in the Turkish province of Bitlis. Hizan is located in the south of the province on the border with Siirt. The city has 10,045 inhabitants and the county 40 526 (as of 2010 ).

History

Hizan was under the rule of the Umayyads, Abbasids, Seljuks and Ayyubids. 1514 Hizan was Ottoman.

Hizan was in the 19th century, a village within the Ottoman vilayets of Erzurum. In 1910 it was the seat of a bishop of the Armenian Apostolic Catholicosate of Aghtamar with 69 parishes, 64 churches and 25,000 believers. 1913 Hizan was occupied by the Russians, but in 1914 left again.

Hizan was declared in 1919 a district within Bitlis. 1936, was Hizan part of the province of Muş, but a little later again part of Bitlis.
