Hjalmar Johansson

Carl August Hjalmar Johansson ( born January 20, 1874 in Karlskrona, † September 30, 1957 in Segeltorp ) was a Swedish diver and a swimmer. In diving, he was Olympic champion in 1908.

Johansson took part in Athens at the 1906 Summer Olympics. In diving, he finished sixth, more than 100 m freestyle he swam in eighth. He achieved his greatest success sporty two years later at the Olympic Games in London. In diving, he was in front of two compatriots Olympic champion, it was the first Swedish Olympic gold medal in the water jumping and the beginning of a several years lasting Swedish dominance in the diving. Johansson started also in the 200 m breaststroke, but did not finish the race. Also in the Olympic Games home in Stockholm in 1912 Johansson took part successfully, he competed this time exclusively in the water jump. In the 10 -meter platform diving he finished fourth, in the so-called simple diving, in which less acrobatic jumps from 5 m and 10 m height had to be shown, he won the silver medal.

Between 1897 and 1912, Johansson won 14 national titles. He is the inventor of many new jump styles and was the first to the so-called Swedish swallow. In 1908, Johansson was in London, where he studied at this time in the founding of the Fédération International de Natation (FINA ) involved. For his services to the water jump he was inducted in 1982 into the Hall of Fame of the water jumping.
