Hjälmaren

The lake Hjalmaren, with an area of 477 square kilometers, the fourth largest lake in Sweden. It borders the counties of Västmanland, Södermanland and Orebro. The Hjalmaren is a shallow lake with an average depth of 6 meters and a maximum depth of 20 meters. The largest tributaries are Svartån and Kvismare channel ( Täljeån ). The Hjalmaren drained by the Eskilstunaån in the lake Mälaren. In the 1880s, the water level of Hjalmaren was lowered by 1.9 meters and 190 km ² were drained.

The largest island in Hjalmaren is Vinön with an area of 4.5 km ².

On Hjalmaren the provincial capital of Örebro is situated.

About the Hjälmare channel, the oldest artificial waterway in Sweden, there is a navigable link to the Mälaren and thus indirectly in the Baltic Sea.
