Højby is located in the Danish North West Zealand and is a small town with 1437 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The village is located about 6 kilometers west of Nykøbing Sjælland and is located in the Odsherred municipality which belongs to Region Sjælland. The town is the capital of the eponymous parish Højby Sogn.

The name " Højby " stems from the location of the place between several hills here. In the church of Højby Højby Kirke, some very old frescoes are found. Furthermore, the chariot of Trundholm in the same bog was found in the neighboring municipality Nørre Asmindrup.

Højby is mentioned as a possible successor to the legendary settlement Høgekøbing.
