Hjo

Hjo is a town in the Swedish province of Västra Götaland County and historic province of Västergötland. It is located on the western shore of the lake Vättern, about 67 kilometers north of Jönköping. Hjo is also the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

Hjo is a medieval city, which is the first time in 1413 mentioned in written sources. Hjo was an important port connection on the way of Västergötland for Östergötland.

1854 a new port and a new quarter was built. Two decades later Hjo was connected to the railway network, which favored not only industrial development. Also a Wasserkuranstalt was that Hjo had become a popular seaside resort.

Cityscape

The Old Town has preserved its medieval plan and large. Just north of the old town to the harbor and the city park, which was originally a belonging to Wasserkuranstalt Arboretum. The wooden villas of the sanatorium are still preserved and are now home to, among other things a youth hostel and the Vättern aquarium and a city museum.
