The HK Poprad is an ice hockey club from Poprad, Slovakia, playing in the top division of Slovakia, the Extraliga.

History

The club was founded in 1929 under the name Karpathenverein Poprad and renamed in 1930 in Poprad HC. In the 1930s, the HC Poprad was one of the best clubs in Slovakia. 1935 merged the HC Poprad with the ŠK High Tatras founded in 1926 and changed his name to HC Tatry.

Beginning in 1945, the club participated in the newly created Czechoslovak state league, from the descent of the club in 1947. In the following years the club took part in the second rate Slovak League ( 1 SNHL ) and changed its name in 1948 in Poprad Tatry Sokol and 1950 in TJ Tatran Poprad. The club then returned to the first division between 1951 and 1954 belonged to, but it was in season 1953/54, Last and thus rose from in the first SNHL.

After this descent the club played until 1991 in the second division of Czechoslovakia. He changed his name over the years in Lokomotíva - VAGONKA - Stavbar ( LVS) Poprad, later in Telovýchovnej Jednoty (TJ) Pozemné stavby (PS ) Poprad, in 1988 and 1990 in SKP Poprad CH PS Poprad. At this time the club was able to celebrate four Slovak Championships, 1970, 1981, 1985 and 1991.

After 37 years of being second class of SKP Poprad managed hp 1991 promotion to the Extraliga and belonged to this league to the same division in 1993. In the Slovak Extraliga HK Poprad Tatravagónka reached in 1997 and 1998 to third place in the championship. At the end of the season 2005 /06 the team won the biggest success in club history, the Slovak runner. After this success the club in HK SKP Poprad Aqua City was renamed as the operator of the Aqua City Poprad was the main sponsor of the club .. In addition to these successes in the league of HK Poprad has not won twelve times the Tatra Cup.

Due to the withdrawal of the main sponsor of the club bears again since 2010 the name HK Poprad and in 2011 was again Slovakian runner-up.

Home ground

The HK Poprad plays its home games at the Zimný Štadión Poprad, now (2012 ) has a capacity of 4,500 spectators. The building was completed in 1973 and by 2006 had a capacity of 5,500 seats. After a rebuild, the capacity was reduced to 4,500 seats by the creation of additional seats.
