HMS Anson

HMS Anson was the name of at least seven ships of the Royal Navy, who were all named after Admiral George Anson (1697-1762):

  • HMS Anson ( 1747 ), a two -decker ship of the line fourth rank with 60 cannons, which was sold in 1773
  • HMS Anson ( 1763), 1763 purchased in 1774 and sold Cutter with 6 guns
  • HMS Anson (1781 ), a ship of the line third rank with 64 cannons, which was rebuilt about 1794 to a frigate with 44 cannons, and 1807 wrecked on the coast of Cornwall in the storm and sank
  • HMS Anson (1812 ), a ship of the line third rank of the Vengeur class with 74 cannons, which was scrapped in 1851 after service as prisoner transport and detention barracks ship in Hobart ( Tasmania )
  • HMS Anson (1860 ), a screw - driven battleship of the Revenge class with 91 cannons, which was renamed in 1883 in HMS Algiers and 1904 was scrapped
  • HMS Anson (1886 ), a battleship the Admiral class, which was sold in 1909 ( sister ships were HMS Collingwood, HMS Camperdown, HMS Howe, HMS Rodney and HMS Benbow )
  • HMS Anson (79 ), a battleship of the King George class, which ran from 1940 batch and 1957 was scrapped
