HMS Dido

Seven ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Dido by Dido, the legendary founder and queen of Carthage.

  • HMS Dido (1784 ), a frigate with 28 cannons, which was launched in 1784 and in 1817 sold for demolition.
  • HMS Dido (1836 ), a corvette of 18 guns, which was launched in 1836, from 1860 served as a coal and was sold in 1903.
  • HMS Dido was planned as a wooden corvette with screw drive. It was in 1861 laid the keel, but the construction was discontinued in December 1863.
  • HMS Dido (1869 ), a wooden corvette of the Eclipse class screw drive, which was launched in 1869, was in 1886 transformed into a Hulk, in 1906 renamed HMS Actaeon and sold in 1922.
  • HMS Dido (1896 ), a cruiser of the Eclipse class, which was launched in 1896 from 1913 was used as a depot ship and was sold in 1926.
  • HMS Dido (37 ) was a light cruiser of the Dido - class, launched in 1939 and in 1958 was sold for scrapping.
  • HMS Dido ( F104 ) was a Leander - class frigate, which was launched in 1961. It was sold to New Zealand in 1983 and renamed HMNZS Southland. In 1995, she was finally decommissioned and sunk as an artificial reef.
