HMS Discovery (1774)

HMS Discovery was the consort ship on James Cook's third voyage of discovery in the time from 1776 to 1779.

Like the other ships of Captain James Cook was the discovery a built in Whitby coal transport ship. These ships were named in the former parlance collier. She was rigged as a brig. The ship was on an expedition under the command of Captain Charles Clerke. As a midshipman went with George Vancouver. After the death of James Cook Captain Clerke took over the ship Resolution and John Gore was given command of the Discovery. When, in August 1779 also died Clerke, Gore took over the command on the resolution and Lieutenant James King led the Discovery back to the UK. On October 4, 1780 they arrived there.

After the discovery was used as a transport ship at the shipyard in Woolwich, until it was finally broken up at the shipyard in Chatham in October 1797.

The HMS Discovery is named after the space shuttle Discovery
