HMS Phoebe

Several ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Phoebe after Phoebe, a figure of Greek mythology.

  • The first HMS Phoebe (1795 ) was a frigate of 36 guns, which was launched in 1795 and 1841 was sold for scrapping.
  • The second HMS Phoebe (1854 ) was a battleship of the fourth rank with 51 cannons, which had launched in 1854.
  • The third HMS Phoebe ( 1890) was a 2nd class cruisers of the Pearl Class, which was launched in 1890 and in 1906 sold for demolition.
  • The fourth HMS Phoebe (1916 ), a destroyer of the Admiralty M- class, which was put into service in 1916, was sold for scrapping in 1921.
  • The fifth HMS Phoebe (43 ) was a light cruiser of the Dido - class, launched in 1939 and in 1956 sold for demolition.
  • The sixth HMS Phoebe ( F42 ) was a Leander - class frigate, which was launched in 1964, was decommissioned in 1991 and 1992 sold for demolition. HMS Phoebe ( F42 ) was also HMS Hero, a fictional frigate Leander class on which the popular and acclaimed television drama series Warship of the BBC was set during the seventies.
