HMS Thunderbolt

Several ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Thunderbolt, after the English word for lightning:

  • HMS Thunderbolt ( 1696 ) was originally a French ship that came into British hands and was placed under the name HMS Thunderbolt into service in 1696. The ship was used as the Hulk from 1699 and 1731 canceled.
  • HMS Thunderbolt (1842 ) was a wooden paddle steamer. The sloop was launched in 1842 and went in 1847 before South Africa lost.
  • HMS Thunderbolt (1856 ) was a floating battery, which was launched in 1856. 1873, the unit was converted into a floating pier. Between 1916 and 1919 the ship was renamed HMS Daedalus and used as a depot ship of the Royal Naval Air Service. The ship sank in 1948 due to the collision with a tractor, was lifted the following year and then canceled.
  • HMS Thunderbolt ( N25 ) was a submarine of the T -Class, with the name HMS Thetis was launched in 1938 and 1939 before Liverpool fell in trials, in which 99 men died. The boat was lifted, as HMS Thunderbolt into service and sunk by the Italian corvette Cicogna north of Sicily in 1943.
