Hoàng Văn Thái

Hoàng Văn Thái (* May 1915; † July 2, 1986 in Hoang Van Xiem ) was a Vietnamese Communist, general and politician. During the Tet Offensive, he was the highest ranking officer of North Vietnam in South Vietnam. He was Chief of Staff at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.

Life

In 1938 he joined the Communist Party of Indochina.

In January 1948 he was promoted to one of the first generals of Vietnam. On 31 August 1959 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general. In 1966 he was assigned as commander and political commissar of Military Region V. From 1967 to 1973, as he was assigned to the South, he was commander of the Viet Cong army and deputy COSVN. In the battle of Loc Ninh, he was Commanding Officer (October 27, 1967 - December 10, 1967 ), also during the Tet Offensive in January 1968 In April 1974 he was promoted to the rank of Colonel General. . He was Deputy Defense Minister, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff and a permanent member of the Central Military Committee appointed. In January 1980 he was promoted to General. He was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Chairman of the Seventh Party Congress. On July 2, 1986 he died suddenly after a heart attack at the army hospital 108
