Hochscheid

High Scheid is a municipality in the district of Bernkastel -Wittlich, in Rhineland -Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality of Bernkastel- Kues.

Geography

The predominantly rural location high Scheid is situated in the hilly landscape of the Hunsrück region at the foot of Idarkopfs. Neighboring communities within five kilometers are Horbruch (Distance: 1.19 km distance), Wahlenau (3.02 miles), Hirschfeld (3.02 miles), Kleinich (3.03 km) and Krummenau ( 3.58 km ). Nearest regional center is Bernkastel- Kues.

History

In Hochscheid a sanctuary of Apollo and Sirona from the 2nd century AD was excavated. There was also the inscription " DEO ET Apollini sancte SIRONE " where " Apollini " refers to the healing god Apollo Grannus, which was identified in the course of interpretatio romana with Apollo.

Hochscheid belonged to Rear County of Sponheim. A first chapel stood before 1529th She was probably the hl. Consecrated Aegidius. 1743 this chapel was destroyed, probably already in the Thirty Years War. In 1752 the chapel was rebuilt, but already in 1790 was only the tower. Later, a winter school was attached to the tower. In the chapel was a bell from 1629 with the inscription "John Burchart Trarbach Pfarher to Clenich. John Schuessler church masters. Anno MDCXXIX " suspended.

Since 1946 it has been part of Rhineland- Palatinate.

Coat of arms

Blazon: The coat of arms is derived from a high excavated in the woods Roman spring sanctuary from the 2nd century. It displays the attributes of the source of the god Apollo, lyre and laurel, and water source.
