The Hochstaufen (1771 m above sea level. NN ) is a rocky mountain and known eye-catcher that between Bad Reichenhall, Piding and Anger ( Berchtesgaden ) rises. He is part of the massif of Staufen and is the easternmost mountain in the Bavarian Alps. From the summit you have a good panoramic view, especially at the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Just below the highest point is the Reichenhaller house, a managed property in the summer hut of the German Alpine Club on the south side in a prominent location. She is the highest hut of the Chiemgau Alps. From there you can watch the sunset over the lake Chiemsee, at night you can see at Salzburg with its airport.

The name comes from the Staufen Middle High German ( " stouf " ), meaning " steep towering rock ". Over the ridge ran from 1275 to 1810 the border between Bavaria and Salzburg. Until the mid-18th century mining was carried out, the most famous tunnel was the doctor - Oswald- studs, who was only 60 meters below the summit. Were mined lead and zinc.

The Pidinger ferrata was newly opened in 2003 and is one of the most difficult climbing trails in Germany.

Myths and legends

From the birth of the Stone Hunter, about leading a popular but challenging way to the summit, telling a story that there are two hunters who were turned to stone there. Instead of going to prayer, they mock the believers when they hear the bell from the valley. But when the two try to shoot a chamois, turned this into the bodily devil. The hunters try to escape, but rears as fog, you hear only a muffled cry. As the fog clears, we see the two hunters who turned to stone now on are forever bound to the place of their iniquity.

Others

The association of Staufen friends will take care of the maintenance and care of the chapel near the Reichenhaller house. There, the Staufen fair is also held once a year, which is visited by many trekkers and believers like. On the eve of the show, a Saturday at the summer solstice, the chapel and the summit ridge are illuminated with innumerable fires. The material it is made by the members for the most part on foot, long before the show to the summit.

On Hochstaufen occur an earthquake swarm. For their research seismometer stations are distributed around the mountain.

On August 3, 1921 breaking on Hochstaufen from a forest fire that lasts for two weeks. Affected were the areas above and below the Bartelmahd.

National became famous for the mountain, as the host of a married couple, Reichenhaller house was murdered during a robbery in September 1993.

The Reichenhaller house was supplied to the use of the helicopter from the support animal company from the barracks Bad Reichenhall.
