Hohentwiel (Radar)

The FuG 200 " Hohentwiel " was a radar unit of the German Luftwaffe during World War II. It was developed from 1938 at the C. Lorenz AG in Berlin. The unit was originally planned for the tender of the Air Force for the new FuMG 40L ( ground-based fire control radar ). After the competitor Telefunken with his " Würzburg " device won this tender, first, the development of the Lorenz machine was stopped in 1939.

From 1941 the unit for another tender of the Ministry of Aviation has been converted for use on board aircraft as search radar against ships. Since no special antenna was required three antennas were initially chosen as the simplest version, one for sending, one for receiving second from left, and a third for receiving the right. To provide a rough guidance the receiving antenna from the radio operator had to manually be switched. Later on a motorized antenna switch has been installed. The received field strength was placed on a cathode ray tube, and so could the observer or pilot the target price will be displayed covering roughly as "Left", "Right" or. The greatest range was 150 km, compared with convoys in the Atlantic. The unit is installed first on Ju 88 and Fw 200 as well as other torpedo bombers. To prevent a possible predation after a crash, were in several small explosive device that could be ignited by the pilot.

Submarine versions FuMO 61-65

" Hohentwiel U" was the adaptation of the FuG 200 for the Navy, particularly on type VII and IX submarines. Also, a number of guard ships and outposts boats were equipped with these devices to locate enemy planes, especially when throwing of sea mines, which greatly simplified the following de-mining.

  • Reach at 8 m antenna height: 8-10 km against surface targets and 15-20 km against air targets at an altitude of 200 m
  • 4 × 6 -dipole not seaworthy installed, see picture below.

Specifications

  • 70 km against warships
  • 150 km against land
  • 10 km against submarines
