Holger Nikelis

Holger Nikelis ( born January 15, 1978 in Cologne), is a professional wheelchair table tennis player since 1997. In the summer 2004 Paralympics in Athens, he won the individual event gold in the team event bronze. Currently Holger Nikelis occupies the first place in the world rankings.

Biography

Before the accident,

His first table tennis experience Holger Nikelis picked up during his primary school years ( 1984-1988 ). For the first time joined a club he is in 1990. Through the club, he could soon deny first competitions that although he only played at county and district levels level, however, there already gained initial success. In Spain holidays 1995, he broke out at the beach when he hit his head in shallow water, the sixth cervical vertebrae. This meant that Holger has been paralyzed since that date from the chest down. Paraplegia from the 6th cervical vertebra ( quadriplegia ).

After the accident

After the accident, Holger Nikelis first had to spend five months for rehabilitation measures. During this action, he reached again for table tennis bats, as this is considered particularly effective training program for paraplegics. Holger could finish his school career with a good high school despite setback in 1997. In the following winter semester of 1998, he joined the University of Siegen studies for a host media, which he broke off around 2000 to begin training as a specialist field of application development. Holger is currently playing in a wheelchair Club Cologne eV (RSC Köln eV ) table tennis. He is coached by his trainer Michael Meissner. Since 2001 he is part of the German Table Tennis National Team. In addition, since 2008 he is still a member of the DBS Top Team Paralympics Beijing and at the NRW Top Team Beijing.
