Honinbō Shūsai

Hon'inbō Shūsai (Japanese本因坊 秀哉; * 1874 in Tokyo, † January 18, 1940 ) was a Japanese professional Go player and the winner of the last Hon'inbō title.

His real name was Tamura Hoju, he was known also as Yasuhisa Tamura. He was the 21st and last heir of the Hon'inbō house, the successor of Hon'inbō shuei.

In 1914 he won the Meijin title as the tenth player after the first Honinbo. In 1936 he transferred the Hon'inbō title at the Nihon Ki- in and retired from Go.

1938, at the age of 64, he returned and played a game against Kitani Minoru, which he lost by 5 points. This batch was processed later by the Nobel Yasunari Kawabata in his work The Master of Go literary.
