Kappenpitta ( Pitta sordida )

The Kappenpitta ( Pitta sordida ) is a bird of the family of Pittas, which is widely used in East and Southeast Asia and the Malay Archipelago and lives in different forest types, but also on plantations and other agricultural areas.

Description

Kappenpitta reaches a length of 16-19 centimeters and a weight of 42-70 grams. The hood and the neck are reddish brown, the rest of the head is black. Breast, flanks, back, and wing coverts are dark green, the latter with a light bandage. The flight feathers are black, as are the tail feathers, which have a blue green top. The coverts are red, the lower abdomen black, and the feet are pale brown to rosy.

Food and lifestyle

The Kappenpitta from various insects (including their larvae ), after which they hunt on the ground, as well as berries. In the breeding season, which lasts from February to August, they build nests on the ground, who are cared for by both parents birds.
