Hoosh

Hoosh is the name of soup -like stews, as they were typical of the Antarctic expeditions of the early 20th century.

The preparation has been done mostly in the Primus stove. The composition of a Hooshs was different, depending on the availability of food. In most cases, it was produced by aufkochte pemmican with water and hard, solidified with gluten biscuit pieces added. To improve the taste still was boiled with bacon and cheese, pea flour, sugar or oatmeal. Often included were also raisins and meat of penguins, seals and ponies.

Apsley Cherry - Garrard often uses the term in his report The worst journey in the world, even for the mixed food for ponies and mules. Ernest Shackleton's report The Heart of the Antartic to Nimrod expedition contains over 40 times this expression, the previously The Voyage of the Discovery for Discovery Expedition was used in Robert Falcon Scott's book.

During the world economic crisis of 1929, the term was used in the English slang for illegal alcohol. He later generalized in English and was used as a replacement for any noun, German about whatnot.
