Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area

The protected landscape area Horna Orava (Slovak Chranena krajinná oblasť Horna Orava ) is a conservation area in the far north of Slovakia in the traditional landscape Orava ( German Arwa ). The area lies in the political district Žilinský ( Okresy Dolny Kubin, and Námestovo Tvrdošín ).

The seat of government is located in Námestovo.

Geography

The area covers the mountains Orava Magura, Oravské Beskydy, the hill country Podbeskydská highlands and the valley Orava kotlina together with the Orava reservoir. Large areas are covered by flysch (sandstone and mudstone ). Through the area of the river Biela Orava, one of the ( original ) source rivers of the Orava flows.

The highest mountain is located on the Slovak- Polish border Babia hora (1723 m nm).

Flora and Fauna

About half of the landscape conservation area is covered by forest. A considerable part is covered by beech, fir and spruce monocultures. Only under the mountains Babia hora, Piľsko Parać and still growing of spruce forest with some mountain ash. In the higher parts of the mountains Babia hora and Piľsko still is the krummholz vegetation stage. A specific feature of the landscape protection area is the presence of peat bogs to a greater extent, more than anywhere else in Slovakia. There grow rare and endangered species such as bog rosemary, marsh tea, Sundew and other species such as White beak-sedge.

The brown bear is one of the more common species, the lynx, however, is rare. The wild game ( deer, roe deer and wild boar ) can be found in the landscape area treasure everywhere. In the protected area you can find capercaillie, hazel grouse, in recent years, black storks or moose. From the birds of prey can be called the spotted eagle, buzzard or raven. A special case is the Orava reservoir, which provides a suitable habitat for water birds.

The other small-scale nature conservation areas have been abolished by new zoning in 2003. In this system, the field in zones A, B, C and D is incorporated.

  • Zone A ( 12.63 km ², 2.2%) is protected under the strictest 5th level. These include the former national nature reserves Babia hora, Piľsko and Spálený Grúnik. Outfitted for protection without human intervention; Hiking outside of marked trails, as well as all economic activity are prohibited.
  • Zone B ( 33.56 km ², 5.7%), where the fourth stage, except Spálený Grúnik, the stream Jelešňa and provides all important peatlands part of the Orava reservoir with the island ostrov Vtáčí under protection applies. Only limited activities for the protection of biotopes such as mowing are allowed, walking outside marked trails is prohibited.
  • Zone C ( 147.93 km ², 25.2 %) is protected under the 3rd stage. These include the forests of the Beskydy Oravské, parts of Orava Magura and the forest ring around the Orava Reservoir and other peatlands. Here economic interventions for the purpose of permanent resistance are allowed.
  • Zone D ( 393.56 km ², 66.9 %) subject to the second stage and includes all not in the previous zones lying areas, ie most villages and agricultural land. Here are permitted in accordance with the diversity, settlement structure and properties of natural human activities.
