House of Assembly of Kiribati

Maneaba ni Maungatabu (English: House of Assembly ) is the unicameral Parliament of Kiribati.

44 members are elected every four years in Parliament. Furthermore, the parliament has an appointed member from the island of Banaba, as well as the Attorney General 's own initiative. The Parliament is located in the capital city of South Tarawa.

Parliament building

A new building of the Parliament building was opened on 14 October 2000 in Ambo, South Tarawa by the then President Teburoro Tito. It is a modern building in historical style of the classic Kiribati meeting houses, the maneabas. It is located in Ambo, former seat was in Bairiki.

Constitutional basis

Organisation and functions of the Parliament are laid down in the Kiribati Constitution of 12 July 1979.

The originally planned number of members was increased by decision of 7 June 2007 on 44. At the same time the allocation of seats was changed: electoral districts with fewer than 1500 inhabitants get a seat, receiving with 1,500 to 5,000 inhabitants, two seats over 5000 people per three seats. This has been increased due to their population growth for the 2007 election, the number of seats for Fanning, Kiritimati, Makin and Tarawa North.
