House of Representatives (Belize)

The House of Representatives in the Central American Belize is shared with the Senate, the Belizean National Assembly and can be compared with the House of Commons in the UK.

The bicameral system was introduced in Belize in 1981 at independence from Britain by the new constitution. In order to move into the House of Representatives, a delegate must have obtained the majority of votes in his constituency. When the constitution was created in 1981, 18 members of the House of Representatives were provided in 1984 this number was increased to 28, 1993 29 and for the elections in 2008, an increase to 31 members is provided.
