Howard Hayes Scullard

Howard Hayes Scullard ( born February 9, 1903 in Bedford, † 31 March 1983 in London) was a British historian.

The son of the professor of Church History Herbert Hayes Scullard attended from 1916 to 1922 Highgate School. Subsequently, he studied from 1922 to 1926 at St John 's College at Cambridge University. From 1926 to 1935 he taught as a tutor at Hackney and New College. In 1929 he received his doctorate with the work of Scipio Africanus in the Second Punic War. Subsequently, he was Reader in Ancient History at King's College in London.

In 1935, he published the work A History of the Roman World from 753 to 146 BC The work summarized the recent historical, archaeological and philological knowledge together. It discusses the economic and social problems of early Rome and Italy and gives an overview of the developments in the Roman law, literature and art during this period. The Oxford Classical Dictionary appeared in 1949, in which he acted as editor and was responsible for the Roman history and wrote about 70 posts. In the revised edition, which appeared two decades later, he has written 150 articles. From 1935 to 1950 he occupied himself mainly with the families of the Roman nobility. These appeared in 1951 working Roman Politics 220-150 BC, which examines the political careers of the aristocratic families in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In 1955 he became a member of the British Academy. 1959 got Scullard at King's College own chair, where he taught until his retirement in 1970. His published work in 1959 From the Gracchi to Nero. A history of Rome from 133 B.C. to A.D. 68 was particularly popular in the English-speaking world and enjoyed numerous editions.
