Howard Mason Gore
Howard Mason Gore ( born October 12, 1877 Harrison County, West Virginia, † June 20, 1947 in Clarksburg, West Virginia ) was an American politician and from 1925 to 1929 the 17th Governor of the state of West Virginia. Previously, he had since 1924 a member of the cabinet of U.S. President Calvin Coolidge as Minister of Agriculture.
Early years and political rise
Howard Gore was born on a farm in Harrison County, which was owned by his mother's family since 1778. He attended the local schools of his home and then studied agriculture at West Virginia University. After graduating in 1900 he was working as a farmer and rancher. Between 1912 and 1916 he served as president of the Animal Breeding Association of West Virginia. Besides, he was still active in the banking business and the hotel business. During World War II he was employed in the office to manage the food in West Virginia. After the war he served first as deputy U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, before he as Minister of Agriculture, was a member of the Cabinet Coolidge from 22 November 1924. After he was elected as a candidate of the Republican Party for Governor of West Virginia, he resigned from this post.
