Howard Shanet

Shanet Howard ( born November 9, 1918 in Brooklyn, † 19 June 2006) was an American conductor and composer.

Life

Shanet studied until 1939 to 1941 Cello and musicology at New York's Columbia University. After a war effort in the Pacific, he studied composition with Bohuslav Martinů and Aaron Copland and conducting with Sergei Koussevitzky and Fritz Stiedry. It was the early 1950s, an assistant to Leonard Bernstein at the New York City Symphony. 1959/1960 he was program commentator for the New York Philharmonic for the New York Times.

He later became a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, the. CBS Symphony and various orchestras in the Netherlands and Israel Shanet composed their own modern works for orchestra and string quartet.

Shanet been since 1953 professor of music at Columbia University and Conductor of the University Orchestra. From 1972 until his retirement in 1978 he was Dean of the Faculty of Music.
